In the aftermath of Chelsea’s devastating FA Cup semi-final loss to Manchester City, Mauricio Pochettino appeared agitated.
At Wembley Stadium, the Blues were defeated once more by a goal from Bernardo Silva in the 84th minute. Chelsea was quite frustrated at the national stadium after a plethora of wasted opportunities, and they made a strong case for a penalty in the second half.
Jack Grealish witnessed the ball Һit his arm within the box, but his pleas were dismissed by referee Michael Oliver. After a quick review, the VAR decided there was no penalty.
During his post-match press conference, Pochettino was questioned on the dispute as well as a variety of other topics. The head coach of Chelsea’s transcript is available for reading below.
vexing since your squad was superior?
Yes, but in football, maintaining composure and being clinical are more crucial than anything else. We played well in competition, but it’s hard to determine who was the superior team in football, so I can’t claim we were. The fact that we participated was crucial. We must draw benefits from the game while competing in this manner. These kinds of moments in games are necessary for this kind of player base. It’s time to build on the things that are doing well and focus on the ones that still require improvement. It’s time to wrap up the season with style and discuss how we can improve for the following one.
Do you believe that you ought to have been punished?
“I’m not sure. I believe your view was superior. It was hard to tell if it was a penalty from the touchline. I was speaking with the referee because my staff and Jesus Perez had stated that there would be a penalty. All I could sаy to him was, “Why don’t you go check out the penalty on TV?” I believe what I observed to be true [he nods to indicate that it was a penalty], but go on.
You ruled the Man City…
In terms of tactics, it is not an issue. You can’t be good today and be incapable of handling a tactical scenario for the previous eight months. It has to do with everything. As a team, we need time to get better. In order to be strong and compete better and better, we must evaluate the group and the squad after about ten months. Based on our findings, we will then decide how to improve in each area. And since Manchester City is undeniably among the greatest teams in the world, we must close the gap with them.
Have you seen enough from your players to believe that this season can still be successful?
We now have a game against Arsenal on Tuesday, who are also a very strong squad. We must be prepared. We may not be able to alter the current situation too much, but I believe that, similar to Manchester City, we will not have Tuesday to recoup and feel fully recovered. However, I’m content with how we’re developing. Naturally, I’m disappointed because we have to divide our thoughts; we focus solely on Chelsea’s past, and the team’s performance does not align with the club’s legacy. Instead of evaluating the team based on Chelsea’s past, we should view them differently. With everything in place, the progression is going well. We must set high goals and consider how we might improve for the upcoming season. This season, we have to close out strong and well.
Cole Palmer appeared to be knocked out. How is he doing?
It’s typical. He’s worn out. However, I don’t think he’s got an issue. I hope there’s nothing more wrong than his being weary, but we need to check tomorrow.
