‘Couldn’t be worse’ – Mauricio Pochettino feels Chelsea don’t ‘deserve’ to take part in the European tournament based on their performance in the 5-0 loss to Arsenal

Based on Chelsea’s performance in a 5-0 loss to Arsenal on Tuesday, Mauricio Pochettino believes his team does not “deserve” to participate in European competition. The Blues are now ninth in the Premier League standings as a result of the loss, and Pochettino acknowledges that it is “difficult to talk about objectives”. With six games left, Chelsea is three points behind seventh-place Manchester United following the crushing loss.

The Blues were soundly defeated, 5-0, at the Emirates Stadium, marking their worst loss since February 2019.

After Leandro Trossard gave the Gunners the lead in just the fourth minute, things took a turn for the worst for the visiting team.

Pochettino on the big defeat vs Arsenal: 'The team gave up'Additionally, Pochettino told TNT Sports that his team did not perform up to par.

“I think we started the game not so well,” he stated. “We conceded the goal and then it was difficult for us to recover.”We compete in the first half, I believe, after ten or fifteen minutes. We were discussing at halftime that we couldn’t begin the second half the same way we had begun the first, but we showed too little vigor and didn’t compete in the manner that was required of us.

“It was really simple for Arsenal to control the game after we let up the third goal, and it was hard for us to bаttle for an objective. That, in my opinion, sums up the first fifteen minutes of the second half as well. I believe we lose the game there.”

Chelsea now sits in ninth place in the table, three points behind seventh-place Manchester United, who have played an equal number of games as Chelsea.

If they are unable to make it to a European tournament, this will mark the first time the club has not participated in continental football over two consecutive seasons since the mid-1990s.

Mauricio Pochettino admits Chelsea 'gave up' vs Arsenal - but won't blame the players - Mirror Online“After this game, we feel disappointed, so it’s hard to see the future right now,” Pochettino said. “It’s difficult to talk about objectives.”It’s hard to communicate if we’re not competing. Okay, so let’s compete versus Manchester City on Saturday. But are we deserving of a trip to Europe if we compete today? Not in this particular sense.”

Leading scorer Cole Palmer was out from the game due to illness, which hurt Chelsea.

The Blues only had one shot on goal the entire game while he was out, while their opponents had ten.

Despite Palmer’s absence, Pochettino declined to attribute the loss to him, sаying instead, “I think we cannot sаy now that was the reason we lost the game.”However, the most challenging aspect of losing a creative player who connects the team’s dots is the circumstances surrounding the person’s departure.More than that, given the conditions, we didn’t compete right away, which made it challenging to participate in the game later on.

We need to compete differently as a result, but we are saying too much.”I believe that talking is sufficient throughout this season. According to all the information we now have, our goal for the upcoming season is to be in a different position. We have to make choices.”You have to be clinical. Three days ago, we generated a lot of chances against Manchester City, but we weren’t clinical. The same thing occurred today.

“So a difficult result, so a difficult performance, because I think it’s not nice to see your team playing like this from the beginning of the game when you’re supposed to have full energy.”
