Celebrating 20 Years Since Chelsea Signed the Iconic Goalkeeper Who Went on to Become a Club Legend: Petr Cech

It’s been 20 years since Chelsea bought one of the best players ever.

The London-based team signed Petr Čech on February 9, 2004, and the goalkeeper became a star at the team.

Petr Čech spent 11 seasons at Chelsea after signing for them in 2004 from Stade Rennais.Since the 41-year-old is still playing sports, Sports Brief takes a look back at Čech’s famous time with the Blues.

When did Chelsea get Petr Čech?

Before moving to Stade Rennais (Rennes) in 2002, the former Czech Republic international goalie worked his way up at FC Viktoria Plzen. Bigger European teams were then interested in him.

He was 21 years old at the time, and Chelsea paid £7 million for his skills.

When did Čech’s first game for Chelsea happen?

The former Czech Republic international stepped up right away and showed why he was good enough to start the 2004–05 season against Manchester United.

The Blues went on to win 1-0. This was one of many clean sheets he would get at the London-based club, according to Chelsea’s website. That season, he kept 24 clean sheets and helped Chelsea win their first league title in 50 years.

Because Čech and “clean sheets” became so linked, he still holds the Premier League record for most clean sheets.

After 11 great years and 494 games at Chelsea, Čech switched colors and joined Arsenal, a team that plays along the same lines as Chelsea.

Reports from Sky Sports sаy that the goalkeeper retired after four years with Arsenal, saying that he had reached all of his goals.

The great Chelsea player stopped playing football in 2019, but he didn’t stop all sports.
