Ian Maatsen, a Chelsea loanee, is now dominating for Borussia Dortmund in a Champions League semifinal matchup against PSG, and all Chelsea supporters on social media are asking the same question: why in the world are we attempting to sell him?
Nor is this an isolated instance. Ever since joining Dortmund in January, he has performed admirably. Despite not being able to play for Chelsea, a team that is suffering in the middle of the league, he appears to be one of the top players while playing against Kylian Mbappe and the other players.
Maatsen was just not given a fair opportunity after spending so much time working his way through the school and honing his skills while on loan. And he still won’t receive one, if Fabrizio Romano and others are to be believed. The intention is to sell him this summer, and considering the way he’s been handled, we wouldn’t be shocked if he declined to return.
A significant error, or two
Although we’ve discussed all of this before, the fact that he’s participating in a game the size of this one tonight really helps to clarify everything.
During his season-long loan, he shown exceptional talent. After that, he excelled in the preseason. During a significant portion of the season, both our first- and second-choice left backs were sidelined with injuries. However, Maatsen received not even a hint of action.
