Chelsea purchased two goalkeepers in the previous summer and one in the previous summer. However, none of those players seem very good at the moment, so it’s understandable that as the transfer window approaches, we’ll still be reading about transfers this summer.

Fabrizio Romano addressed one of these links in his exclusive Caught Offside column this week. Emi Martinez has positioned himself as that most uncommon of things since joining Aston Villa from Arsenal: a well-known, celebrity goalkeeper.

Romano isn’t yet persuaded by these connections:

Romano stated, “I’m aware there have been reports about another former Arsenal player as Emi Martinez has been linked with the Blues after his superb form for Aston Villa. Chelsea are also attentive to the goalkeepers market, from what I heard.”

Martinez likes being at Villa right now and is totally focused on the team. Chelsea’s decision is still up in the air, so we’ll have to wait and see.

Not a significant temptation yet

To be honest, there are a couple reasons why we don’t think this will happen very soon.

First off, we are not going to be in the Champions League next season; Aston Villa will. Martinez wants to benefit from his efforts in assisting him in getting there because he is a hero there.

Second, considering his early-career setbacks at Arsenal, he will likewise be cautious about moving forward. He has been flourishing at Villa, where the fish are well-managed and have room to grow, in a somewhat smaller pond. Why take a chance when Chelsea doesn’t really provide an improvement over that at the moment?

Thirdly, despite his low €28 million TransferMarkt valuation, Villa likely views him as priceless due to his significance to them, therefore Chelsea shouldn’t anticipate a low-ball offer either. However, a season can change all of these variables, so don’t be shocked if this move is reconsidered in a year.
