David Fofana was interviewed exclusively by Capital Football following Burnley’s relegation at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium yesterday.
The Chelsea loanee performed admirably during his six months there, but he was unable to sustain the Clarets’ success. With an unknown future, he now plans to return to Chelsea for the preseason.
“I haven’t given returning to Chelsea any thought yet. I believe I’ll return, and why not play Chelsea in the preseason? I wаnted to stay [in January], but a few things happened. However, I can honestly sаy that I am not envious of Nicolas Jackson, who is also a buddy.
He did appear to be sticking with Broja when he was leaving in January, but they were both loaned out in the end. Nicolas Jackson was able to play the remainder of the campaign without suffering an ιnjury or receiving a suspension, therefore it was a rιsk that paid off. However, we will need to start making important decisions on the Ivorian’s destiny come summertime.
Despite his Premier League goals, we paid €12 million for him, and Transfermarkt now values him at just €10 million.
An opportunity to take Armando Broja’s role as Jackson’s backup
After an unexpectedly quiet first half of the season at Union Berlin, Fofana made a strong impression in his Burnley debut games, which helped ignite the team’s comeback attempts before they ultimately collapsed in the last month.
He undoubtedly performed well enough in those contests to secure a valuable Premier League loan for the upcoming campaign. His desire to return to Chelsea and help Jackson is also not unreal; nevertheless, much will rely on how the market performs this summer.
It’s not implausible that the sporting directors believe Fofana is prepared to trail Jackson in preference next season, freeing up funds for other areas of need and paving the path for Broja’s sale.
