Musical icon Cyndi Lauper was asked to comment on fellow singer-songwriter Taylor Swift—who continues to dominate the music industry with her new album The Tortured Poets Department and ongoing Eras Tour—and she didn’t hesitate when sharing her opinion of her.
The “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” singer, 71, was asked about Swift during a recent appearance on BBC’s The One Show, saying, “Look, I like her. I think she’s terrific.”
“I think as an artist she writes some wonderful songs,” she elaborated, before spotlighting Swift’s Folklore and Evermore albums, saying, “I first started listening during the pandemic when she wrote the record when she went and hibernated and did that record. That wonderful, like, folk record almost.”
Both Folklore and Evermore were released in 2020 in close succession and they share a similar style of music.
Lauper went on, adopting a bright smile as she boldly said, “I’m proud of her. She’s terrific.” The other people on the show seemed to agree, calling her a “global superstar” and a “nice person,” while Swift’s boyfriend Travis Kelce also got a shoutout.
Fans were in love with Lauper’s supportive comments, with replies like, “This is how your peers should speak about you! Unlike some other names! Love Cyndi!!️,” and “The authenticity when she says proud is felt. ️.”
“Cyndi, you are a national treasure and a girls [sic] girl ,” said another, as a fourth chimed in, “This makes my heart smile. Icon recognizing another icon..”
Someone else declared that Swift officially got Lauper’s “seal of approval,” while a few took this as a sign that the two women should team up for a collaboration. One such fan suggested they perform Lauper’s hit song “Time After Time” together.
Along with Lauper, many more musical artists have voiced support for Swift, with a few others being singer Debbie Gibson and Pearl Jam vocalist Eddie Vedder.
